Lighting control, dimming

Lighting control and dimming refer to the control and adjustment of light in a room. This is important to ensure adequate lighting according to need, comfort and energy efficiency. There are different methods and technologies for lighting control and dimming that allow the intensity of light to be adjusted according to the situation or individual preference. Some common lighting control and dimming methods include:

  • On/off switches: These are the most basic means of controlling light. They allow the light source to be easily switched on or off.
  • Dimmers: These are devices that allow the light output or intensity to be gradually adjusted. They are used to dim light sources such as incandescent lamps or LED luminaires. Dimmers can be manually controlled via physical switches or integrated into smart automation systems.
  • Motion sensors: Motion sensors detect the presence of people in a room and trigger the lights to turn on. When motion is no longer detected, the light is automatically switched off. This is useful for energy saving as the light is only used when it is needed.
  • Light sensors: Light sensors detect the level of natural light in the room and adjust the light sources accordingly. If there is enough natural light, artificial light sources can be dimmed or switched off, helping to save energy.
  • Smart systems: Smart systems for the home or office provide comprehensive lighting control. With apps on smartphones or controllers, users can adjust the intensity, colour and on/off switching of different light sources. Some smart systems can also be based on a schedule or react to detected scenarios.
  • DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface): This is a standardised protocol for the digital regulation and control of light sources. It allows the precise adjustment of light output for individual luminaires or groups of luminaires in different zones.

Lighting control and dimming are important for domestic use as well as in commercial and industrial environments. Proper light control not only improves people's comfort and productivity, but also contributes to energy efficiency and electricity saving.
